We already knew that Blizzard took several years to develop StarCraft II, but did you even have a remote clue about how much the sequel actually cost to make? According to Wall Street Journal the game’s budget was over 100,000,000 dollars. That’s about how much GTA IV also cost to develop. Can you even imagine that?
The report doesn’t cite a source but even if that figure is true, StarCraft II is expected to turn a profit for Blizzard and its shareholder, Activision Blizzard. Analysts expect sales of the game to total several million this year worldwide and at $60 per copy that means the game will have to sell “just” 1.7 million copies to go over the $100 million mark.
Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime hopes that players of its MMORPG “World of Warcraft” will also find an interest in StarCraft II. He stated: “We’ve brought in a lot of new players in the beta testing who’ve been playing ‘World of Warcraft’ but have never tried Starcraft.” The good news is that, as long as you pay your WoW subscription, you can play StarCraft II for FREE. Just a reminder: the original StarCraft remains one of the most popular games ever made, with over 11 million copies sold. Long live Aiur!
